A tweak to the formation from coach Dan gave Saxons a solid midfield and helped shut down the opposition’s attacks from the outset. A surprise visit from former vice-captain and everyone’s favourite wing woman, Donna, added some extra fire as the team flew out of the traps and moved the ball seamlessly around the pitch.

Excellent teamwork kept Saxons firmly on top throughout the opening 25 minutes, with the ball staying high up the pitch. Despite registering an incredible 12 shots on target, however, the home side could not quite find a way over the line.

As tired legs began to show towards the end of the half, Crawley looked to capitalise and won a couple of short corners. Goalkeeper for the day Claire Deaves led the defence brilliantly, and Saxons stood strong to keep the score goalless at half-time.

A rallying team talk during the break gave Saxons renewed determination to make their chances count—and it took just two minutes. Gabriella Sabbage struck a cracking goal from just inside the circle to put the home side 1–0 ahead.

Crawley’s defence continued to put up an excellent fight, forcing the Saxons forwards to work hard for another breakthrough. It eventually came when Abi Holt sent a lovely ball through to Mandy Marriott, who met it with a decisive touch to make absolutely sure it crossed the line.

With a 2–0 lead and 20 minutes still to play, the clock seemed to run more slowly than ever! Saxons nevertheless remained composed, worked hard for one another and saw out the game to secure a thoroughly deserved victory.

Player of the Match went to Jess Bunker after a cracking performance on her official adult league debut, while Claire Deaves completed an excellent afternoon by securing a clean sheet.

A special mention must also go to Ruby for her superb cheerleading skills as she supported the team ahead of taking the leap into university life next week.

It was a week of fond farewells, surprise visits and positive vibes all around. Three points are already on the board—bring on the rest of the season!
