A tough game today that showed we’ve clearly been away for a few weeks — with some of us perhaps enjoying a few too many mince pies! It was nil–nil at half time, with us looking strong and producing some really good interlinking play across the pitch.
A rousing team talk from Coach Dan at the break gave us all plenty of food for thought. Unfortunately, it took us a couple of minutes to come out of the traps in the second half, which allowed Eastbourne a lucky break and two quick goals in succession.
A ricocheted ball then caught Beckie straight in the eye, but after a brief reset (and Beckie keeping the bench warm), we regrouped well. A change in formation helped us hold strong for a period, until an unlucky foul gave Eastbourne a free hit. They worked the ball beautifully up the pitch and finished with a very well-taken goal — one we have to admit was lovely.
At 3–0 down, we found an inner push and forced our way back up the pitch. We won a short corner, which then led to multiple back-to-back shorts for what felt like hours. Eventually, a lovely pass into the D from Ruth was picked up by Holly, who finished with a wonderful angled strike, curving neatly into the goal.
The game ended in a 3–1 loss, but it was a great performance from everyone and plenty to build on.
Star Player goes to Ruth for her speed, movement, and ability to cover multiple positions with ease.
Post-Christmas-itis definitely struck at times, with a few moments of forgetting how to play hockey, but our lovely captain takes home the aubergine this week for the worst miss in recent history — failing to stop a pass coming straight to her stick with no one near her!
