Not only was Sol Buckner's side handed its third defeat in a row but also a four point deduction after Penguin third eleven suddenly withdrew from league Sussex Hockey Division Five.
All points earned against Penguin were removed from the league table leaving Saxons on 23 points from 18 games, with a draw and a win over the Angmering-based side chalked off.
On the pitch, Saxons laboured against a strong Horsham side with their own sights set on promotion.
Buckner's men found themselves pinned down in their own half for much of the opening exchanges.
And the visitors deservedly took the lead on 18 minutes on the break leaving keeper Richard Heath stranded.
In the second half Saxons fought hard to get back on level terms but couldn't find a way past Horsham's solid defence.
The visitors were gifted a second goal on 52 minutes when a shot from outside the D cannoned into the goal off defender Tom Waters' foot.
Saxons tried valiantly to lift their game and created a host of chances.
Man-of-the-match Paul Merison had a goal-bound short corner flick cleared off the line, Joe Lovell hit a post and Buckner watched in agony as his reverse flick flew wide of the far post.
Buckner said: "It was a slightly disappointing end to a season that promised much more.
"We were beaten by the better team on the day who packed a very solid midfield and defence.
"It was also disappointing for Penguin to drop out the league as we need as many teams as possible.
"I would like to thank all the players, supporters, staff at Horntye Park, SSHC committee members and Marion Deaves for providing our teas throughout the season.
"Our team will dust itself down now and get ready to go again in September."
Saxons welcome Tonbridge Black Knights on Saturday for a friendly match with a 3pm push back.
This year's annual club dinner will be held at Cooden Beach Hotel in Cooden, Bexhill on Saturday April 5. For tickets email bundayshockey@btinternet.com or contact Amelia Acott
