A DEPLETED Saxons side fell on their own sword against high-flying Crowborough during half-term week.
Sol Buckner was forced to field three junior players on Saturday for this tough away Sussex Hockey Division Five fixture.
Despite a solid start, poor marking allowed the hosts to take two easy goals and a commanding half-time lead.
Saxons pushed hard to get back in the game but were punished on 45 minutes when a wild swing was missed by the umpire leading to a short corner off Phil Carrington's foot as he ducked for cover.
The hosts converted the ensuing short corner melee to make it 3-0.
Paul Merison pinched a goal back on the 55 minutes but any ideas of a comeback were put to bed when Crowborough scored from another short corner to inflict Saxons second loss in the last 10 previous games.
Saxons welcome St Francis IV to Horntye Park tomorrow for a 10.30am push back.
