Sol Buckner's men started brightly in the late winter sunshine at Millais School.
And Buckner went close in the opening minutes when a searing short corner strike was just parried by the keeper.
A hamstring injury to John Lowe caused a reshuffle which derailed Saxons momentum.
The defence worked hard to stop the hosts taking the lead.
Buckner's half time team talk saw Saxons spring out the starting blocks.
But they had Lowe to thank on 39 minutes when he coolly stopped a goal bound shot on the line after stand-in keeper Roger Coleman had been beaten.
The skipper smashed the ball into the D from 20 yards out and watched in amazement as the keeper deflected it into his own goal on 42 minutes.
But the hosts hit back minutes later with a smartly taken drag flicked short leaving Coleman no chance.
Undaunted Saxons pressed forward again.
And man-of-the-match Tom Waters cracked the ball into the D on 57 minutes to see a defender divert it into his own goal.
Saxons faced a barrage of attacks as the hosts pushed for an equaliser.
And it came minutes from time when a strike from 10 yards beat Coleman at the far post.
Buckner said: "We should have won it. Injuries and formation changes ruined our chances but we are playing some solid hockey at the moment. It's clear to see our training and fitness is paying off now."
Saxons welcome Penguin III to Horntye Park tomorrow (SAT) for a 1.30pm pushback.
