The 40-year-old veteran sprinted 40 yards into the D to beat the advancing keeper to secure a well-earned draw.
Saxons first league game of Sussex Open Hockey Division Five was one to remember as the game ebbed and flowed like a boxing bout.
Tom Giles landed the first blow on five minutes, but the hosts hit back.
Joe Woodford rifled home a short corner shot on 12" before Phil Benske made it 1-3 minutes later with a deft reverse stick shot.
But the hosts replied twice on the break to level before the break.
And Penguin started the brighter of the second half successfully claiming a controversial strike on goal from outside the D on 42".
They then grabbed a fifth through another break.
Saxons refused to lie down and Benske cracked home a second goal on the hour before Buckner latched on to Dom Whitaker's pass to round the keeper and slot home from 10 yards.
"It was like a boxing match," said Buckner. "We'd hit them and then they'd hit back and both teams refused to be out for the count.
"A wonderful advert for our league. Everyone on the pitch deserved a pat on the back."
Saxons welcome Southwick III tomorrow for a 4.30pm push back.
