"This is my 25th league season in hockey and that was among the best games I've ever played in," beamed jubilant South Saxons fourth team captain Sol Buckner.

Lewes V 1 South Saxons IV 2

It was certainly a day Buckner will not forget after facing a two-and-a-half hour drive to get to Lewes following major traffic delays due to two accidents.

Fielding five junior players from the Warriors team, Buckner's side faced the undefeated Sussex League Division Four leaders Lewes who had not conceded a goal in their four previous games .

With no time for introductions or a team warm up, Saxons calmly set about their business and the hosts quickly realised Buckner's side would be no push overs.

The hosts had the better of the chances in the opening 15 minutes and George Sutton, making his fourth team debut, pulled off a series of fine saves.

But it was Saxons who almost opened the scoring on 21 minutes when Isaac Wall slammed a reverse shot against a post after a goal mouth scramble.

However Lewes collected the rebound and broke quickly down the other end to score against the run of play.

In the second half Saxons superior fitness began to tell as midfield dynamos Oliver Cornelius and Wall continued to surge forward.

And in the 56" minute, Saxons deservedly equalised when Joe Woodford smacked home from eight yards after superb build up play.

Minutes Woodford was on hand again to coolly slot home from close range after another quick break out lead by defensive lynch-pin Gui Green.

Saxons poured forward in the final 10 minutes as they looked to put the game beyond Lewes and the final whistle brought home just what Buckner's side had achieved.

"Lewes were a strong team of experienced players and a huge challenge," said Buckner. "Without the Warriors I might have had to call the game off. But they weren't there to just make up the numbers, they wanted to win the game.

"They were immense to a man and I can't praise them enough. Our fitness and speed proved decisive in the second half and we thoroughly deserved the victory."[b]
George Sutton earned man-of-the-match with five team votes closely followed by Gui Green with four votes

Saxons welcome Brighton VI to Horntye Park on Saturday for a 12pm push back.
