Defensive lapses cost Saxons dearly as they succumbed to promotion rivals Crowborough in this tough Sussex Open Hockey Division Four clash.

Two goals in the first 10 minutes for the visitors left Saxons chasing the game at Horntye Park for the first time since losing to East Grinstead IV back in November.

After finally gaining a foothold in the game, winger Paul Merison won a short corner which was smartly put away by Julian Buss at the second time of asking.

Crowborough flew out the blocks after the re-start and Saxons found themselves 1-4 down by the 40th minute of the match.

And it could of been worst for Phil Carrington's side if their man-of-the-match Fergus Bruce hadn't pulled off a series of fine saves in goal.

Despite their best efforts Saxons couldn't make any headway against a determined and powerful Crowborough side.

Tomorrow Saxons travel to Brighton VI for a 1-30pm push back
