Saxons came up against a very strong and much improved from last season East Grinstead side, as their excellent winning run came to an end. The home side started strongly and only good goal keeping kept out Coach Rob Whitehouse, Paul Merison and the returning John Morgan.
A rare attack from the away side saw Saxons not clear their lines and were punished despite the best efforts of outstanding Man of the Match keeper Fergus Bruce.
Saxons pushed forward with Captain Phil Carrington and Julian Buss linking up nicely once again in midfield, only for East Grinstead to sneak another goal. This fired Saxons up and they stormed forward in search of a way back in against the leagues best defence. A perfect pass from Juilan Hooton picked out Merison on the back post who slotted home, while showing nibble footwork.
The halftime talk was more of the same and Saxons once again came shooting out of the blocks, constant pressure saw a well worked short corner fall to Whitehouse, his reverse stick shot was stopped over the line by a defenders body, this was sadly missed by the umpire who awarded a penalty stroke. Whitehouse stepped up and converted the flick into the roof of the goal.
As the game wore on the eleven men of Saxons tired and the away side used its subs wisely to score two more goals in quick succession. The game ended South Saxons Men's 4's 2 - 4 East Grinstead Men's 4's.
Saxons can take huge pride In this and all their performances having gained promotion last season, Whitehouse commented after the game " Myself and Phil set the team a mid table finish an to be 3rd in the league at this stage is a great start"
