After an 18 month, 20 game unbeaten league run South Saxons 4th team made their long anticipated debut in the Marletts 3rd division. Despite numerous attacks in the first half, A strong defensive display from R.Patel, G.Cooper and keeper E.Carr-Taylor kept it goal less at the break.
The second half saw the home side feel similar threat and conceding a succession of penalty corners. One such finding its way from deflection into the back of the Saxons net following a strike form the edge of the D. However, this spurred life into the 4th XI and the fight back ensued. An outspoken Lewes forward received a green, followed by a yellow having become frustrated. Advantage was taken of Lewes being down to 10 men. The Saxons side now playing further into the Lewes half. Young J.Patel played a nice pass to P.Rye who forced the ball closer to goal for M.Bate to sweep the ball past the keeper. The game ended 1-1.
Captain Paul Rye emphasised how pleased he was to get the first league game out of the way and taking a point. The team showed the same grit seen throughout last season and shows that we are very capable of competing in this higher division. Bring on next Saturday.
