Invincibles!

So despite confirming the division title a few weeks earlier, Saxons had created a further pressure they had put on themselves. The side had not lost a game all season, it would be a crying shame to do so in the very last game of the season.
As the game started, it was clear why Saxons were sat at the top of the table. Playing with confidence and holding possession well, with the odd exception of a break away counter attack. Most of the half was played in the final third. Saxons were just not clinical enough to really take advantage of the possession. Often being too direct in the crowded D.  Thankfully Saxons were awarded a short corner, although not to plan, James Heafield had to pull the ball across the D where he was floored by an outcoming defender resulting in a Penalty flick. James calmly put it away. The third of three he has scored this season. With not long left until the break, all were hopeful of taking the lead into the 2nd half. Unfortunately Lewes found themselves in the D and won a short corner. Mathew Bate ran down the barrel of the impending strike and took it full pelt just below the knee. Any other player and we would have missed a man for the rest of the game. Matt is a machine and a true leader of the field.  The corner was retaken and Lewes claimed a goal.  Half time 1-1.
At the break we shared some hard home truths. It was time to get out and claim the unbeaten season long run. Again Lewes had other plans. As the Captain watched from the bench we conceded a further 2 goals. The skipper could not contain himself and put himself back on as well as debutant Phoenix Brampton. Fired up, the leaders of the team pumped everything they had into the game, not a ball was wasted. For the last 15 minutes leaving Adam Millicent to marshall our half alone.  Quickly we  made our way back into the D and found reward in a short corner. James Heafield claimed another and secured this term as team top goal scorer. The ball swiftly returned to the centre of the field and the fight was truly on. Then Phoenix Brampton took the ball beautifully up the left wing confidently beating the Lewes midfield to the delight of the screaming Horntye Park faithful. Then slipped a ball to the D where Archie was waiting to beat the keeper from range. 3-3.
Man of the match - Archie Sullivan. Constantly fought, never gave up. A Saxons 4's hero this season!
So proud of the comeback, the fight, the determination and grit this side have shown in this game and many others. Our position at the top of the table made it look easy. But there was  many games we have to had to show this level of fight. When you are on top, everyone wants to knock you down.  So proud of the boys!
This season we have featured 29 players in league games alone. But still managed to remain consistent. The team has been patient and respectful as we have managed the numbers and somehow always positive! A big well done to our junior players that have played this season, you have all been excellent and vital in our push for promotion.
Thank you Saxon Mens 4's for making it the best first season as Captain it possibly could be. So proud of you all!!
