Saxons cancel the Saints March!

Match Report by Sam Stonestreet

After the previous weeks aquatic adventures, the 4s left a wet and dreary Hastings to travel to the somewhat tropical climbs of BurgessHill to play a St Francis side in good form.

With the pre match team talk from El capitan Paul about getting a job done today ringing in our ears we began.

The Saxons started with aplomb with a series of quick passing moves and constant pressure which led to multiple short corners and chances on goal yet we were lacking a finishing touch.

During the middle third of the half the game was turned on it's head with a period of sustained pressure from St Francis which was kept at bay by the Saxon's answer to the legendary 2011/12 Juventus back 4 featuring Eddie ' second coming of Buffon' Carr-Taylor making some crucial saves which was also a coming theme.

After a series of chances to close out the half, the Saxons were feeling optimistic going into the break.

The second half was the moment where the Saxons really turned the screw. As St Francis did have some chances they were no match for the Saxons as Matt Bate manged to put the ball in the back of the goal after a series of Saxons shots on the St Francis goal. He wheeled away in celebration envisioning his name in lights, only to realize the goal had been pulled back for a short. A scenario that repeated itself on a further two occasions in a groundhog day sequence of events of the Saxons putting the ball in the goal just after the umpire blew her whistle. At this point we began to wonder whether today would be our day.

However, come of the hour, cometh the man. After a series of shots led to a P flick, James tucked it away with an outrageous finish through the legs of the keeper which all but sealed it. The Saxons then orchestrated a incredibly disciplined performance to see out the win with a particular mention to Ollie Levy for coming on and making key tackles to help see out the win.

Overall, a job well done with a strong team performance! Saxons look ahead to Worthing at home to officially confirm the title at Horntye Park.
