Saxons edge closer to history

A slick, six goal demolition job of Mid Sussex left South Saxons with one hand on the Sussex Hockey Division Five title.
Phil Carrington's sharpshooters quickly shrugged off the surprise home defeat to Eastbourne last time out and flew out of the starting blocks.

Warren Hood hammered home an angled shot from 10 yards out in the third minute before Sol Buckner smashed in a short corner minutes later to give Saxons the perfect start.

Buckner helped himself to two more well taken goals to put the league leaders comfortably 0-4 within 25 minutes.

Tom Waters almost made it five just before the break but his effort crashed back off the post.

The hosts tried their best to repel wave upon wave of attacks as Saxons poured forward in the second half.

The three young players who moved up from the Warriors, Alex Cornelius, Ethan Waller and Harry Dyas, were outstanding in both defence and attack giving Saxons an extra dimension to previous outings.

Hood bagged a brace on 55 minutes nutmegging the keeper from close range before Buckner made it six up with another fine solo effort rifling home from top of the D.

Despite numerous short corners, Saxons could not add to their tally and enter an enforced three week break sitting comfortably on top of the league with a nine point gap to second place Eastbourne.
