Saxons start season with a win

The first match of the season was a long away journey to Angmering near Worthing to play the Penguins. This is normally a hotly contested match with some lovely teas afterwards, and this time was no different with goals, card and chips and sandwiches in a pub that serves real ales complemented the warm but rainy day the match took place on.

Saxons had a team that spanned several generations from Les Cornish to Tom Waters. We had a new keeper to South Saxon club this season Mike who got a well deserved man of the match for carrying out saves when Worthings attacks came against the run of play. The first 15 was back and forth until South Saxons got a short corner which we converted through a slightly scuffed shot from Ed Huton 0-1.

In an even match South Saxons managed to find a long ball from the bottom left to the pitch to a waiting Joe Woodford on the edge of the oppositions D to rifle a shot home 0-2. After this goal the play got a little more feisty with the captains being called over to ask the players to stop pushing, this did not really happen both sides were as bad as each other with a couple of greens shown, one to each sides players. Then in a near carbon copy of the second goal Joe popped up for his second to take it to 0-3 to saxons and the end of the first half.

The second half was a lot less exciting with a lot more to and fro play between the teams with both goalkeepers making excellent saves against some slippery shots. Jamie always looked dangerous down the right till getting a ball to the leg which reduced his speed for a while Saxons had some more chances on goal at acute angles Dom Whitaker and Craig but both hit the side netting. The second half was ground out at 0-0 with disciplined defending.

Saxons took the win and the first 3 points of the season. There were some things that we need to work on but these can be easily rectified in training. Well done all same again next week please guys
