PENGUIN III 0 SOUTH SAXONS IV 3
Sol Buckner's rejuvenated side turned in a stunning performance on Saturday to show their intentions for Sussex Open Hockey league division five.
Woodford, 50, fired home a smart shot from the top of the D on five minutes to open his account.
Penguin pressed hard for an equaliser but Sussex County trialist Ben Bosden was in sensational form saving everything the hosts could throw at him.
Saxons broke clear on 21 minutes and Woodford finished off Paul Merison's cross to stun Penguin for a second time.
A second half reshuffle saw Buckner drop into midfield and Saxons poured forward but couldn't find a way past the host's keeper who repelled several short corners.
Penguin held fast until the hour when Buckner drilled home Merison's short to wrap up the points.
Buckner said: "We were awesome, the best hockey we've played since I arrived two years ago.
"Penguin had a lot of young lads in their team and full credit to them they never gave up.
"The team effort was fantastic. It's just such a pleasure to be the captain on day's like this. I think we've laid down a marker for the rest of the season because this game will take some beating."
Saxons welcome Eastbourne V this coming Saturday, for a 10.30am push back.
