Report by Ed Hooton. South Saxons started the game nervily allowing Crowborough’s route one style of hockey to put them under pressure.

Great work from the veteran centre back, Dom Ford and new comer David Waters settled the team’s nerves and allowed south Saxons to put the pressure onto Crowborough. The midfield began to spread the ball with more purpose around the pitch allowing for the forwards to penetrate Crowborough’s defence. A good run from the young Johnny Orr saw the ball reach the stick of the well-built and experienced James Bunday who flicked the ball into the top right corner to put south Saxons 1 – 0 up at half time.

South Saxons started the second half strongly with Fox Parkers pull out game confusing the opposition, as he slipped the ball to the somewhat fit Tom Gregory, who slotted home a bullet of a shot into the bottom right corner to give the side a 2-0 lead. South Saxons continued to put the pressure on Crowborough only to see their attempts thwarted by the agile man mountain that was Crowborough’s goal keeper.
South Saxons looked like they were on course to a definite three points before injury’s prevented the team from substituting. With a tiring team south Saxons allowed Crowborough to score a scrappy goal and swung momentum towards the home side. Very shortly afterwards Crowborough won a penalty corner and the new captain of Saxons James Wilson had to watch in despair, as the ball went past his stick into the corner of the goal with only a few minutes left in the game.

South Saxons determined to make amends for the lapse in concertation piled on the pressure with man of the match Ed Hooton winning a penalty corner in the last minute of the game. This was then converted by Hooton with a deflection from the incisive cross of Tom Gregory to win the game. Saxons coming away with all three points with a final scoreline of 2-3.
