Mens 2's add to their unbeaten run.

Paul Merison14 Mar 2017 - 17:51

Report from James Bunday. This week saw Saxons host Worthing 3rd XI, hoping to move 3 points closer to cementing 2nd place in Sussex Division 2.

Saxons flew out of the blocks, playing good passing hockey and pressing Worthing high up the field. This high tempo approach appeared to catch Worthing off-guard and before long Saxons had a deserved lead when Andrew Orr picked out Ed Hooton with a pinpoint reverse stick cross, and the winger made no mistake from close range.

Saxons doubled their advantage shortly after when Aston Spinks’ shot was blocked by a defender’s foot on the line, and captain James Bunday despatched his 3rd penalty stroke in two games to make it 2-0. Saxons were then 3 goals clear when Tom James burst into the D from the left and slotted the ball past the Worthing keeper at the near post from the tightest of angles.

Worthing reacted by grabbing a goal back, against the run of play, following a swift breakaway – but Saxons restored their 3-goal lead when Man of the Match Hooton picked out Bunday’s late run into the D, and the skipper pounced to make it 4-1 at half time.

The second half fizzled out into a relatively drab affair, Saxons squandered a couple of short corner opportunities while Worthing never really created anything resembling a chance after their goal in the first period. Saxons did keep coming forward though and their dominance was rewarded when James Bunday cut in from the left before firing the ball into Andrew Orr whose deft touch took the ball past the keeper to make the score 5-1 to Saxons at the final whistle.

Captain Bunday said after the game; “it is a good result today, when we went to Worthing we started poorly and found ourselves 2-0 in no time, today was the opposite and we killed the game off in the first 15 minutes really! Obviously it would have been nice to have kept going better and got a few more goals to reflect the difference between the teams, but we’re pleased with another 3 points and we’ll be working hard to give Brighton Rocks a good game next week!”

Saxons are still unbeaten in 2017 and will be hoping to continue that, and go back on top of the league, when they travel to league-leaders Brighton & Hove Rocks tomorrow (Saturday) at 12pm.

Saxons: Smith, Ford, Stevens, W.Orr, Gregory, A.Orr, Wilson, Spinks, Hooton, Bunday (c), James, Waters.”
