The game started with Saxons keen to press high and dominate the ball, this was exactly what happened with all 10 outfield players in Lewes' half at several points during the first period.
Ten minutes in, and Saxons had a lead, Will Orr - fresh from 4 goals last weekend - dragged a penalty corner into the bottom right to give Saxons a deserved lead. That lead was doubled moments later in similar fashion, this time Orr putting one just inside the left post, and Orr almost completed a first half hat-trick when he sent a reverse stick shot whistling past the post moments later.
Lewes cut Saxons’ lead in half when their skipper pounced on a loose ball at a penalty corner with 10 minutes to go in the first period, but Saxons quickly restored their two-goal cushion when the returning Nick Taylor cut into the D from the left and fired a reverse stick shot past the keeper via a deflection off a defenders foot.
Saxons could have been even more comfortable at half time, but Taylor had another goal chalked off by the umpire, Andrew Orr’s goal was adjudged to have struck from outside the D and Ben Coope was also denied a first goal for the club after a foul in the build-up, meaning that Saxons had to settle for a 3-1 lead at the interval.
The second half was very one-sided, with Lewes seemingly more concerned about damage limitation than mounting a fight back, with the Saxons defence of Dom Ford, Tom Gregory & Matt Stevens, and keeper Brock Smith largely untroubled for much of the half.
Saxons failed to find a further breakthrough until 20 minutes into the second period, when Will Orr’s drag flick was well saved and Ed Hooton was on hand to squeeze home the rebound to make it 4-1. Saxons completed the scoring moments later when James Wilson found Hooton in the circle, the winger unselfishly rolled the ball past the keeper to Taylor who was in the right place to slot home from close range.
Will Orr hit the post with a stunning drag flick that looked destined for the top corner, and captain James Bunday squandered a good opportunity to get on the scoresheet but got underneath his short corner strike, meaning that the game finished at 5-1 to the home side.
The 3 points lift Saxons to the league summit by a solitary point, though Brighton Rocks do have 2 games in hand - next week sees Saxons travel to local rivals Eastbourne.
Captain Bunday said after the game; “it was a good performance today, we never really looked in trouble and it felt like we were good value for the win. It was nice to get revenge on Lewes after we lost up there earlier this year!
It’s a great feeling to go top of the league, we know that it’s still really in Brighton’s hands, but we have the points on the board so they have some work to do now if they want it back!”
