The game started in cagey fashion, Saxons having more of the ball, but the home side defending resolutely and threatening to make it a tough afternoon for the visitors. When James Wilson was struck on the knee and was forced into an injury break, it was threatening to be one of those days for Saxons who were being constantly re-buffed by a defence determined to stand firm.

Around the 15-minute mark Saxons won a short corner and while it didn’t go to plan, Bailey Wright reacted well to pick up the loose ball. The youngster drove into the circle, beating his man at the top before coolly flicking the ball into the far corner to give the away side a deserved 1-0 lead. Once Saxons had the lead, with Tim Pilbeam & Matt Stevens in defence looking determined to keep the home side out, it looked like the game would only go one way – a second penalty corner was awarded when Wright’s shot struck a defender’s foot and captain James Bunday fired home to double the away side’s advantage.

Saxons squandered a couple more chances, Wright brilliantly rounded the keeper only to see his chipped effort cleared off the line and James Bunday fired wide from another short corner, however when Sam Bunday was hacked down just inside the 25 another penalty corner was awarded and this time Aston Spinks drag-flicked the ball home to make it 3-0. Spinks fluffed an opportunity to double his tally moments later when he found only clean air with his attempted volley, and the same player showed great composure to round the keeper before being clattered to have his goal-scoring opportunity denied, and earn his side a penalty stroke. While James Bunday was off the pitch, Tom Gregory stepped up to take the penalty and duly fired the ball into the bottom corner to put the away side 4-0 up at half time.

The second half saw only one further breakthrough, great work from Sam Bunday down the right saw him pull the ball across goal, where Ed Hooton was on hand to convert from close range and make the score 5-0. Further chances came and went, James Bunday forced two good saves from the keeper. Tom Waters’ energy down the right was causing problems and the tireless midfield work rate from Gregory, Wilson, Spinks & Sam Bunday meant that Littlehampton never really had an opportunity to release the pressure they were under.

Ultimately though, Saxons were unable to add to their lead and the game finished 5-0, with Bailey Wright picking up the Man of the Match award.

Captain Bunday said after the game; “another good win, and another good boost for the goal difference. With Worthing 2s & Horsham dropping points it’s been a great weekend for us, we have some big games coming up which we know will be tough, but we’re playing some really good stuff and we’re confident we can keep this run going!”

Saxons host Brighton 4s at Horntye Park at 1.30pm tomorrow (Saturday) and will be looking to continue their winning streak.
