Men's 2's succumb to defeat in final ten minutes.

Paul Merison5 Dec 2016 - 17:25

Report from James Bunday. A spirited late fightback from league-leaders Brighton Rocks stunned the home side, as Saxons surrendered a two-goal lead in the last 5 minutes to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

The game had started brightly for the home side. Pumped up from their comeback win at Worthing last week, Saxons started the game well and played some terrific hockey. Brighton we're under pressure from the get-go and Saxons were causing problems early, Ed Hooton was proving a handful down the Saxons right, the midfield trio of James Wilson, Aston Spinks & Jon Meredith were controlling things in the middle of the park, and anything that did get through to Dom Ford & Matt Stevens in defence was being mopped up well.

It was Meredith who eventually broke the deadlock on the 20-minute mark, he drove into the circle following a strong run and his deflected shot looped over the keeper to give the home side a bizarre, but richly-deserved lead. Shortly after this Saxons doubled their lead, Meredith found James Bunday in the circle and good work from the skipper saw him pull the ball back to Spinks who reacted well to a deflection off a defenders stick and rifled the ball into the top corner on the volley, making the score 2-0 at half time.

Brighton started better in the second half and after an even first ten minutes, got themselves back into the game following a slick passing move. However, Saxons reacted well and quickly restored their two-goal cushion. Bunday held the ball up well, before finding Tom James down the Saxons left, the winger then drove into the circle and picked out James Wilson, who caressed the ball into the bottom corner with great composure, 3-1.

As the game entered the final 10 minutes, Saxons were still on top and looked set to leapfrog their opponents and take top spot in Sussex Open Division 2. However a yellow card to James Wilson would see him sit out the remainder, and heaped pressure on to the so far relatively untroubled Saxons back line of Ford & Stevens, the yellow card brought with it a short corner for Brighton - the ball struck Dom Ford on the line and from the resulting penalty stroke Brighton's captain pulled a goal back for his team, 3-2.

This goal appeared to knock the stuffing out of Saxons, the heads dropped, tiredness set in and what had looked so comfortable just minutes early now seemed a mammoth task. Brighton surged forward relentlessly, a criminal error in the Saxons defence saw a Brighton forward left unmarked on the far post to tap in the equaliser and shortly after this, another short corner saw Brighton complete the fight back and snatch all 3 points to retain their place at the league summit.

Captain Bunday said after the game; "today was desperately difficult to take, to give away 3 goals in the last 5 minutes has devastated the boys. We can ultimately take heart from the fact that we completely outplayed the league leaders for 60 of the 70 minutes, but that doesn't really count for a lot right now.
"Hopefully we'll be able to use this as an inspiration for future games, it's a tough one to take today but I'm proud of how the lads played and I still believe we have enough push for promotion this season."
