South Saxons Men's I's 4 v 3 Burnt Ash Men's I's

Paul Merison13 Jan 2020 - 18:59

South Saxons 1s kicked off their second half of the league season with a fine 4-3 win at home to Burnt Ash.

Match Report by Jamie Busbridge.

It became clear in the early exchanges that it was going to be a scrappy game with both sides struggling to keep hold of the ball for any sustained period.

It was the visitors who struck first when Saxons gave the ball away in their own half and Burnt Ash made the 2 on 1 count with a finish at the back post. Saxons responded as Will Orr pushed up from centre back before finding Chris Meredith with the pass. Meredith arrived in the D unmarked and slipped the ball past the keeper at his near post. However, before long some sloppy passing from Saxons found the Burnt Ash centre forward and Saxons were 1-2 down. A feisty game ensued and led to a yellow a piece before both teams were given a final warning with the promise of further cards to come.

The half-time score was 1-2.

Saxons came out 2nd half and pushed for an equaliser but fell further behind and with 20 minutes to go it looked like a come back could be out of reach. Saxons battled hard however and reduced the deficit when Alex Coombs found the top corner from their first short corner of the game which was won after a trademark Gavin Cload run down the right. The home side continued to attack and found the leveller when Jon Meredith found Lloyd Williams on the byline, who played the perfect pass across goal to Jamie Busbridge who made no mistake with the finish to make it 3-3. Saxons weren’t done there, and secured 3 valuable points with a counter attacking move between Coombs, Ollie Cornelius and Busbridge ended with the ball falling to Harry Reece, who pushed it home to the delight of the home supporters.

Saxons remain 2nd from bottom of Kent and Sussex Regional Division 1 and travel to Ashford this coming weekend for another key game in their battle for survival.
