Match Report from Paddy Cornish. South Saxons 1st XI travelled to league leaders Brighton in the hope of changed fortunes from previous weeks.

South Saxons 1st XI travelled to league leaders Brighton in the hope of changed fortunes from previous weeks.

The game started with the home side having the majority of possession and Saxons struggled to grasp the game.

Jonny Meredith, Paddy Cornish and former Brighton player Andy Acott were all grafting to get a hold of the game in the middle of the field.

The energetic and youthful Brighton team soon broke the deadlock with a well worked goal that opened up the away defence and passed around the young Nate Webster in goal.

Brighton's second goal was an almost repeat of the first and the Saxons defence were left chasing shadows once more.

Before the break Tudor Stainsby was sinned binned for 10 mins for hitting the ball away, slightly after the umpires whistle.

The half time chat was still positive and the general feeling was that the travellers were still in the game.

Brighton had other ideas though, and were soon 3 up, a well worked short corner which was slipped to the left to then be returned to forward on the far post to pass into the goal.

Brighton 4th and 5th goals came from great teamwork to open up the Saxons defence. It was to be a frustrating afternoon for Gavin Cload, Toby Reed, Danny Burnett and Chris Meredith at the back.

More cards were shown to both teams towards the latter part of the game. Stainsby saw a yellow again for a heavy tackle, Reed got a yellow for muscling his man of the ball and Jon Meredith saw an unfortunate green.

The shot of the game came late on when a loose ball fell to a Brighton forward who smashed the top bins to finish it 6-0.

Man of the match goes to Paddy Cornish for tireless effort in midfield.

A lot to be learnt for the Hastings team as the go into a massive game at home to BBHC tomorrow (Saturday). Home record in their favour but it will still need to be a good performance.
