MATCH REPORT BY ANDREW ORR. Saxons Back To Winning Ways

Saxons put their loss last week against Lewes in the past by defeating St Francis 8-1 last Saturday. The win keeps Saxons’ three point lead at the top of the Sussex Hockey League Division One before this week’s vital game away at Hailsham.

The game started off with Saxons firmly in control, passing the ball around well and dominating early possession. A couple of chances were nearly converted until a well-rehearsed short corner was despatched by Alex Coombs to give the front side a deserved lead. However, the opposition soon equalised against the run of play. After this surprise, Saxons got back into the swing of things and a second practiced short corner routine was scored by a Olli Beal. As half time approached, captain Jamie Busbridge scored two well taken goals to take a healthy lead into the break.

The message at half time was more of the same and Tudor Stainsby goal seemingly put the game to bed at the 45 minute mark. The second half saw some extremely exciting hockey being played by the home team resulting in chance after chance being created. Paddy Cornish then got himself onto the scoresheet and Coombs grabbed his second in quick fashion. There was just about time left for one last goal with a great flowing team move being finished by John Morgan, much to the delight of the supporting crowd.
