Match Report by Jon Meredith

An unchanged side from the victory against Penguins the previous week made the trip to Lewes at the weekend for another tough fixture in which Saxons unfortunately fell on the losing side for only the second time this season.

Lewes were boosted by the inclusion of a new player fresh from Loughborough University 1st VI who saw a lot of the ball in the early exchanges. The game began at a frantic pace with both sides having chances but the home side having the majority of possession. It was Lewes who took the lead when Alex Coombs was penalised for what looked like a clean tackle outside the D and the home team dispatched the resulting short corner into the roof of the net.

The goal appeared to give Saxons a wakeup call as they began to gain control of possession and the midfield through Jon Meredith and Gav Cload. The visitors started to create chances of their own with the electric Alex Coombs causing the opposition defence constant problems and Jamie Busbridge going close on the stroke of half time only to see the keeper deny him in a one on one situation.
Saxons came out firing in the second half with a sense of urgency to get back on level terms and they thought they had early on in the half. Tudor Stainsby found attacking right back Chris Meredith’s run on the right flank and when Chris found Busbridge in the centre Saxons thought they had equalised, only to see the goal controversially ruled out for a push off the ball no one had seen. To make matters worse for the league leaders, Lewes doubled their lead against the run of play shortly after through another short corner despite Paddy Cornish’s best efforts in defence.

South Saxons did show the spirit that has seen them rise to the top of the league this season and managed to pull one back to reduce the deficit. Man of the Match Jon Meredith dispossessed an oncoming Lewes midfielder in the defensive half before playing a well weighted aerial ball down the right hand side to Olli Beal, Beal then found Stainsby in the D who subsequently smashed the ball into the back board.
Saxons piled on the pressure in the final moments but could not find a way through the Lewes defence.

Despite the result, Saxons still remain on top of the table and will look to return to winning ways against St Francis this week in their title push.
