Saxons Mens 1's 'de-lighted' with another win

South Saxons travelled to St Francis looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. With Dan Burnett & Andrew Orr absent and Jamie Busbridge struggling with a calf injury they called upon James Bunday, Olli Beal & Ed Hooton.

The away side started the game well with the returning Jon Meredith providing a calm head in the midfield. Chris Meredith went close with a couple of reverse stick efforts before Alex Coombs continued his fine goal scoring form when he put away a rebound from a short corner routine. Despite continuing to dominate, Saxons failed to create any clear cut chances for the forwards and a clinical finish from a short corner by St Francis meant the 1st half finished 1-1.

The second half started well with James Bunday getting on the scoresheet with an instinctive finish. Olli Beal was looking like more and more of a threat but it was Alex Coombs who then bagged his brace with a mazy run and finish.

Saxons rhythm was frequently broken up by the floodlights tripping out every 5 minutes. During these disruptions St Francis managed to get a goal back from another short corner. Despite repeated appeals from Saxons players the game continued in this stop-start fashion as lights took 5 minutes to restart each time.

St Francis then had the opportunity to level things up from a short corner but the lights went out for what was to be the final time. The umpires abandoned the game 7 minutes from the end and the 3-2 win stood for the Horntye based side. Alex Coombs was awarded Man of the match for another fine performance.

2nd placed Saxons play top of the table Hailsham on Saturday knowing a win will put them top.
