Our starting line-up worked well and a superb set of passing manoeuvres led to Waters setting Weddle up for a ‘rocket’ of a shot into the Maidstone net.
Maidstone found themselves matched by Saxons who did not really look under too much pressure, until a mis-controlled pass led to a rapid counterattack from Maidstone and an unstoppable reverse stick shot resulted in an equaliser for Maidstone.
Half time finished 1-1, and Saxons returned to the pitch with renewed determination to take the win.
The second half despite a strong team effort from Saxons resulted in a stale mate. With the full-time score 1-1 the teams moved to penalty flicks to decide the result.
Saxons stepped up with Kemsley and Cornelius both scoring from the spot. With Saxons keeper Sutton looking like he was ‘taking candy from a baby’ denying Maidstone on their second attempt. Two further Saxons flicks on target were saved by the Maidstone keeper. Maidstone levelled the penalty flick tally 2-2. Until player of the match Tuppenny stepped up for Saxons and beat the keeper. Bringing the tally to 2-3. The onus now on Sutton to save the final flick from Maidstone. Suttons experience paid off, and he did not disappoint under pressure, effortlessly parrying away the attempt. A great win against talented opposition.
Captain Mezza said 'Taking 16 paid off, we had the right mix of players and our rotations worked well. On the night our persistence and team effort paid off. It's good to see new players, who joined us for the off season, develop and work together in a fast paced game. It's amazing that all three teams from our Group three have made it through the quarters to the Semis. I think that demonstrates what a tough group we had.'
Saxons look forward to facing Folkestone U21 in a semi-final clash at finals night on 29th August. A place in the final is within touching distance and the team are determined to overcome the 0-0 deadlock they faced against Folkestone in the group stages.
