Ahead of the summer mixed hockey league South Saxons visited Folkestone Optimists Hockey Club for their annual Easter Hockey Festival.

South Saxons captained by Jamie Busbridge got off to a flying start on the first day of the competition. Saxons were undefeated during qualifying and topped their group on the first day. Their winning formula was taken through to the group stage of the cup competition scoring the most goals in the group (15) and conceding the least (7). Once again topping their group.

Group Results
South Saxons 7's 6 -v- 3 Ashford Soup-a-Stars 7's
South Saxons 7's 7 -v- 2 Deal 7's
South Saxons 7's 2 -v- 2 Folkestone U16 7's

The semi final was played between South Saxons 7's and Saxonish 7's who also had shown great form finishing runner up in their group. A feisty affair ensued with South Saxons 7's tactical awareness and skilful youth showing through. Saxons emerged 3-2 winners.

Ashford Soup-a--Stars 7's were runners up in Saxons group. However they were judged to have fielded unregistered players and were disqualified giving the impressive Folkestone U16 7's an opportunity to face Purple Nasty 7's in the other semi final. Folkestone emerged winners to play a sporting rematch in a final with South Saxons.

Folkestone started strongly and a well worked move saw South Saxons concede an early goal. Undeterred, an inspired run from the back saw Alex Coombs burst into the D and fire a reverse shot into the top corner. A few moments later skilful youngster Abigail Merison picked out a pass to man of the match Busbridge who fired a reverse into the bottom corner.

Saxons led 2-1 at the half time break.

The youthful Folkestone side restarted with a fast break levelling the score. Busbridge scored a second when he deflected a pinpoint pass from Paul Merison past the keeper. Saxons focussed on maintaining their shape with the impressive Studholme close to scoring but denied by the post and keeper. Assist king Coombs found Busbridge with an aerial ball who broke into the oppositions D to score his hat trick. Folkestone pushed Saxons back testing outstanding centre back Caitlin Merison and on form Loder who worked well to keep Folkestone at bay. The final whistle saw Saxons emerge as 4-2 winners deservedly lifting the Mixed 7's Cup.

Saxons: K. Loder (GK), E. Studholme, C. Merison, A. Merison, A. Coombs, J. Busbridge, P. Merison.
