Saxons Warriors captained by Oliver Cornelius took the honours in Tier 2 of the Eastbourne Hockey Club Meningitis Research Charity sixes tournament.
Saxons Warriors 4 - 0 Kwik Sticks (Eastbourne)
The opening game against a young Eastbourne Kwik Sticks side started in fine style with the Warriors moving the ball effortlessly around the pitch and pulling off an early strike from Dave Waters securing a 1-0 lead. It was not long before Busbridge joined Waters on the scoresheet after some link up play with Harry Dyas and Oli Stuart. Kwik Stiks did manage a couple of forays into the Warriors D and were denied by a solid centre back performance from Cornelius and some sharp goal keeping reactions from Brock Prestney-vaughan. At 2-0 up the Eastbourne side struggled to break down the Warriors structure. A poor clearance from the Kwick sticks keeper toward Paul Merison caused him to slip on the wet surface, but he kept his composure to find Busbridge for his second goal. At 3-0 it did not look like Kwik Sticks day as the Warriors applied more pressure allowing Waters to secure a fourth goal for Saxons.
Hailsham 1 - 3 Saxons Warriors
Again the Warriors got off to a flying start with a Waters assist, for Busbridge to secure a 0-1 lead. Shortly after 'Turbo' Dyas in his new astros latched on to a short pass from Stuart finding Busbridge in the D to deflect the ball into the Hailsham goal. Hailsham in their usual style fought back, an intercepted pass allowed Hailsham to close the gap to 1-2. The Warriors gave an instant response when a string of perfect passes allowed Busbridge to drive into the D and find Merison at the far post to slap the ball into the Hailsham backboard. Another strong near textbook performance and a 1-3 win.
Silver Stick Sizzlers (Eastbourne) 0 - 3 Saxons Warriors
An experienced Silver Sticks side controlled the opening minutes with some good structured play and crisp passing. However, they struggled to find the net and a couple of short corners including a well placed drag flick were no match for Prestney-vaughan who parried the ball over the bar. Saxons used their experience, speed and superior fitness to break down the Silver Sticks and this time it was Dyas who got on the scoresheet with a tap in after a great ball in from Waters. A few minutes later it was a Busbridge strike from a penalty corner that led to a second goal. The Silver Sticks fought back, Merison intercepting a pass only to be undone when he pulled up sharply with a hamstring injury forcing him to leave the field. Warriors orchestrated another attack with Waters again getting on the scoresheet. The team coming away with a 0-3 win.
Saxons Warriors 2 - 0 Sussex Allstars (Lewes)
A tense start to the game with Cornelius AWOL, meant the injured and immobile Merison was offered up as 'cannon fodder'. Fortunately after the first minute Cornelius reappeared and Mersion was able to retire to a coaching position on the sideline. The Allstars were not able to live up to their name as the battling Warriors without the luxury of fresh legs from the bench pushed forward for a great opening goal from Waters. The Allstars continued to push for an equaliser but their desire to carry the ball into the waiting defensive lines of Stuart and Cornelius was their undoing. A swift counter attack involving Dyas and Waters found Busbridge for another goal for the Warriors. Saxons left the field with a fine 2-0 win.
At the end of the Group stage Saxons Warriors finished top of their group on 12 points and a convincing 11 goal difference.
The other Tier 2 group saw two Saxons Sides 'Rather play Fortnite' and 'South Sick Sons' battling for 1st place. A tense game resulted in a convincing win for 'Rather Play Fortnite' to top their group and set up an all Saxons Final.
The Final - Saxons Warriors 3 - 1 Rather Play Fortnite.
The final got underway with some good passing play and the young legs of Rather Play Fortnite causing early problems for Warriors who were unable to close down Weddle who wibbled around Stuart and found Rowland who managed to slip the ball past Prestney-vaughan to give Fortnite a 0-1 lead. Fortnight were strong in attack but at times lacked the experience to defend as a team, and were saved on a number of occasions by both Ford and Sutton. However, it was Busbridge who stole the show when the Warriors moved the ball around to set up Busbridge on three occasions to achieve a hatrick completing the Warriors unbeaten run and winning the final.
It was promising to see the youngsters developing into a strong body of skilful players and beginning to mature in their approach to playing the game and passing the ball around so well. Some food for thought for Busbridge and Prestney-vaughan when selecting for the Men's higher XI's next season.
