Welcome to the new decade and the second part of the season.

There are some interesting challenges and opportunities that will enliven our hockey this year:

Kit
I have been impressed with the success and efficiency of the introduction of the new kit; final tranche being delivered shortly. I have even overheard comments from other clubs on how cool we look!

Additional Pitch
A couple of games were played recently at Bexhill Academy with tea facilities at the Rose & Crown. All went well, so we are prepared for the move from Horntye when it occurs.

History
2020 is our 125th season ….not many sports clubs have this heritage. A Working Group comprising Jen Meredith, Kat Jenner, Dan Bontoft, Bill Butler and myself is planning a range of activities to celebrate our history. Watch this space.

Disciplinary & Respect
There are definite signs that the Respect campaign is working but the Disciplinary Panel has still had to meet to discuss two red cards. Responsibility rests with us all, so be prepared to challenge unacceptable behaviour from team mates, spectators and opposition.

Socials
The social scene at the club is one of our strengths and an entertaining and varied list of events is planned and will be notified on the website.

Umpires
Some new faces have refreshed the umpiring pool managed by John Gale; welcome to George Deaves, Laura Klein, Aaron Holloway and Daniel Mason. We also have some umpiring courses coming up so let’s see if we can expand that pool further.

Teams so far
The Ladies’ teams seem to be well established in their leagues and the three junior sides are flourishing and becoming a conveyer belt of talent for the club.
The Men’s 2’s & 3’s are performing well and achieving mid-table positions.
The Men’s 1’s have a battle royal to maintain their status in the top Regional league but are approaching the challenge with respect for the quality of the opposition and a willingness to enjoy every game.
The Men’s 4’s are also in a relegation struggle but with a nice mix of the ancient and modern, I am sure they will prevail.

As I said, some challenges and opportunities for South Saxons in the coming year but nothing that is beyond us.

Keep enjoying your hockey.
