Obituary Geoff Slacke

Bill Butler remembers Geoff

Another of the club's Old Guard passed away at the start of March.

Geoff Slacke was an out-and-out centre forward who played in Saxons 2nds and 3rds when I started playing in the 70's.  Without ever rushing about the pitch, he was a defender's dream; all you had to do was whack the ball into space and Geoff would get on the end of it.  And, when he got in the D he timed his strike in a manner few of us can.

Professionally, Geoff was a senior sales representative for Rotary Watches and by the time he'd put his belongings into the team valuables bag it's worth at least quadrupled!  He played tennis at Amhurst in the hockey closed season, again, elegantly and with great timing before, in high summer, towing his motor launch to the Cote d'Azur for the Slacke family holiday.

He was a great friend and team mate, even lending me his old RAF shorts one game when I'd rushed out without a pair... now that was a sight to behold!

Bill Butler, Hon. Vice-President, SSHC
