South Saxons stalwart Paul “Mezza” Merison earns selection for Scottish Thistles Masters World Cup squad.

South Saxons HC are delighted to celebrate the selection of Paul Merison for the Scottish Thistles Masters World Cup squad.

The Masters World Cup tournament will take place at KHC Dragons Hockey Centre in Brasschaat, Belgium, from 6th to 16th August 2026, bringing together some of the finest international masters hockey players from across the globe including England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Netherlands, Germany and Australia.

As part of the preparations coaching and training games will be held in Glasgow in the lead up to the competition.

Paul’s hockey journey with South Saxons began after his children first picked up hockey through one of the club’s primary school tournaments. What started as supporting his children’s involvement quickly developed into years of commitment and service across almost every part of the club.

During his time at Saxons, Paul has become a hugely respected figure both on and off the pitch. Taking on various committee roles and representing the men’s section, touring sides, summer mixed teams, and previously captaining the Men’s 3 XI, he has also dedicated countless hours to helping with the development of players across the club.

A qualified coach and umpire, Paul has played an active role coaching our junior section as well as Men’s 3s, 4s, and 5s, alongside the Women’s 1s and 2s. His coaching contributions have helped deliver several successful promotion campaigns, including a memorable Sussex Plate triumph for our Women’s 2 XI.

Paul’s selection for the Scottish Thistles is recognition of both his playing ability and his long-standing commitment to hockey.

Everyone at South Saxons wishes Paul the very best as he prepares to represent the Scottish Thistles on the world stage in Belgium this summer.
