HALL OF FAME: Sir Simon Bollom

HALL OF FAME: Sir Simon Bollom

Paul Merison10 Oct 2016 - 18:00

Our President Peter Klein interviews Sir Simon Bollom.

Simon must be one of the hardest players that Saxons have produced and pushed the opposition and the rules to the limit. His mouthguard was adorned with 'BOLLOCKS' and if the umpire warned him he just grinned!

He recently retired from hockey but his two children continue the Bollom hockey tradition. Chris plays for Wimbourne in Dorset and Emily has just joined Cambridge City.

NAME: Simon Bollom

NICKNAME: Bollo

AGE:56

PERIOD PLAYING HOCKEY:1975-2011

PERIOD PLAYING HOCKEY AT SOUTH SAXONS:1975-81 with the odd guest appearance thereafter for the cup runs.

BEST MEMORIES: Folkestones hockey festival: Hunter, Gregory, Masterton, Addrison, Acott, Robertson, Boswell, Mills and Roddy Davidson.

WORST MEMORIES:As above.

OTHER PLAYERS OF THE TIME: Tanner probably the best player the club produced – sheer class and certainly the worst kit. Saxons only international?

THOUGHTS ON MODERN GAME: Fantastic; fast and flowing with all the old stupid rules removed:off-side, obstruction, sticks etc. I wouldn’t have spent much time on the pitch though with green card suspensions.

WHAT ADVICE/HELP WOULD YOU GIVE TO SAXONS: Enjoy your hockey and play hard on and off the field.
