Deaves to umpire Masters World Cup

Deaves to umpire Masters World Cup

Paul Merison26 Apr - 19:47

There are career progressions… and then there are leaps to the world stage.

Former South Saxons Men’s 1st XI goalkeeper George Deaves has achieved exactly that, earning selection as an umpire for the prestigious 2026 WMH World Cup Rotterdam, taking place from 22 July to 1 August in the Netherlands.

George will be officiating at one of the premier events in Masters hockey, organised by World Masters Hockey, where top players aged 35 to 50+ from across the globe compete. The Rotterdam tournament alone will host multiple age group competitions for both men and women, alongside international Masters Cup fixtures, highlighting the scale and quality of the event.

What makes George’s appointment even more impressive is the level of competition among officials. With strong global interest and only around 75–80 umpire slots available for the Rotterdam World Cup, selection represents recognition of consistency, technical ability, and composure at the highest level of the Masters game.

For those who remember George commanding the circle as South Saxons’ last line of defence, this achievement marks a remarkable second chapter in hockey. Transitioning from goalkeeper to elite umpire is no small feat, requiring a deep understanding of the game, sharp decision-making, and the respect of players and peers alike.

Everyone at South Saxons will be immensely proud to see one of our own representing the club on the international stage. We wish George every success in Rotterdam—no doubt he’ll approach it with the same focus and determination he showed in goal.
