A first class home performance by Saxons Mens 3's meant Mid Sussex Mens 3's left Horntye Park empty handed.

Saxons were up for this fixture from the off. A lack lustre away performance earlier in the season allowed Mid Sussex to get the better of Saxons and finish the game 2-3. A pre match briefing from Captain Buss was to make up for the early season blip in results, and to take 6 points from the next 3 games. In front of a vocal home crowd his boys did not disappoint.

Saxons started in the attacking style that has become their trademark this season. An aerial pass from Stroud found Simmons who placed a perfect ball to man of the match Dyas in the Mid Sussex D. Dyas connected with the ball only to find his shot smothered by the oncoming keeper.

Mid Sussex had little opportunity to penetrate the 23m line of the Saxons defence with Saxons midfield and back line working well together to thwart all forays into the Saxons half.

The pressure mounted, and on 16 minutes, a recycling manoeuvre allowed Saxons to break forward. Simmons picked up a ball from outside the D and rounded two defenders before beating the keeper on his reverse.

Minutes later fresh legs arrived on the field and it was another skilful display by Simmons that set up Jonne Tryphonos for Saxons second goal.

The half time score reflected the missed Saxons opportunities in front of goal. With a better conversion rate Saxons would have been out of sight by half time. A stirring talk from Buss picked up on the missed opportunities, and some poor passing, but at least did end on a positive as the team were 2-0 up after all!

Saxons attacked the Pavillion end, spurned on by support from the balcony. The press at times becoming a little ragged, allowed the opposition out of their own half. Mid Sussex tried to pull back from their deficit, but were met again with a stirling defensive display. The oppositions persistence finally resulted in a penalty corner that was mustered away by the capable Sutton.

A Saxons counter attack gave rise to a goal scoring opportunity when a pass found an opposition foot in the D. The penalty corner routine went as planned when Chapman slipped the ball to Simmons whose first time touch found the backboard.

Saxons continued to push for further goals and a shot on target from Ed Chapman was stopped by a back stick on the goal line. The result was a penalty flick for Saxons. Chapman stepped up and wrong footed the keeper but unfortunately hit the post.

Saxons face Lewes away this coming Saturday. Based on Lewes current form and Saxons 2-0 home loss earlier in the season Saxons expect a tough fixture.
